The Central South Trail is rural New Zealand at its best – starting in Timaru, home to one of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches, Caroline Bay, the trail will continue through the beautiful South Canterbury countryside, heading up towards the mountains, lakes and rivers of the majestic Mackenzie Country and finally to the iconic Lake Tekapo (Māori Takapō).
A trail suitable for all members of the public
The Central South Trail offers an enjoyable experience for walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages, with easy to intermediate terrain. Designed as a sectional track, it connects key destinations between Timaru and Tekapo—passing through Pleasant Point, Cave, Fairlie, and Kimbell. The trail provides users with flexibility to create their own itinerary, whether exploring segments of the route or linking up with iconic rides like the Alps 2 Ocean Trail.
