Fairlie is the gateway to the majestic MacKenzie Country- an iconic section of the trail that winds through high altitudes and tussock-covered grasslands unique to the region.

The area takes its name from legendary Scottish sheep rustler James Mackenzie, who once roamed these rugged hills.

While in Fairlie you can visit the memorial in the town centre and also the Fairlie Heritage Museum, which has one of the largest vintage wagon and carriage collections in the country. Fairlie has a range of eateries to choose from including award-winning pie’s from the Fairlie Bakehouse, their salmon and bacon pie is a must try.

Longer stays

If you’re planning a longer stay in Fairlie, you’ll be perfectly positioned to visit the authentic Mt Dobson Ski Area- just a short drive away. Catering to beginners, families, and experienced skiers alike, Mt Dobson is typically open from July to early October.

Visitors can also enjoy a trip to a local alpaca and llama farm, where baby cria are usually on view from December to February.
